Helical compression spring with spring rate

In your harnessBlender toolMIT

Generate a compression spring as a round wire swept along a helix with closed end coils, and report its free length, solid length and spring rate from the wire material. Use it for mechanisms, suspension props and machine details.

Render of Helical compression spring with spring rate
The render its check recorded in Blender 5.2.1, 192 by 192 pixels.

What it takes and gives

Operator
baltor.coil_spring
Parameters
mean_diameter, wire_diameter, active_coils, pitch, end_coils, clockwise, samples_per_turn, wire_sides and 1 more
Result
One closed, smooth-shaded mesh object named Coil Spring along +Z.
Blender
4.2 or later
Axes
Blender Z up, -Y forward
Units
metres

Limits. Ends are closed but not ground flat, so the spring does not stand on a flat face. The height changes pitch abruptly where active coils meet end coils. The rate uses the basic formula G d^4 / (8 D^3 n) without the Wahl curvature correction and assumes small deflections. Extension spring hooks are not modelled. Verified in Blender 5.2.1; written for the 4.2 API.
