Grass from above

In your harnessProcedural textureMIT

Generate tileable PBR maps of grass seen from above: thousands of tapered blades layered with a z-buffer over soil, from mown lawn to meadow with flowers or dry summer grass. Use for ground planes and top-down games.

Render of Grass from above
The render its check recorded in Godot 4.7.2, 256 by 256 pixels.

What it takes and gives

Entry point
generate
Maps
albedo, normal, roughness, height, ao
Parameters
blades, blade_length, blade_width, lean, dryness, flowers, hue_shift, saturation and 1 more
Presets
default, meadow, dry_summer, lush_dark
Tileable
yes
Command line
python grass_lawn.py --size 1024 --seed 7 --preset NAME --out DIR [--width W --height H] [--set NAME=VALUE] [--directx-normal] [--orm]
Godot material
material.tres
Blender builder
blender_material.build_material(folder)

Limits. Blades are flat strokes in a height map, so the texture suits ground seen from above or at a distance; close views need geometry or alpha cards. At small sizes blades are under a few pixels wide and read as speckle. Occlusion is a blurred-height estimate.

Checks
command line generates declared maps, maps decode, maps have declared size and channels, maps tile without a seam, normal vectors unit length facing out, maps carry detail, godot imports the maps, godot material template loads every map, godot compatibility render, capture shows the textured surface, blender builds the material
Techniques
Tapered capsule strokes painted with a z-buffer, Per-blade hashing for direction, length and colour, Clumped placement from low-frequency noise, Petal stamps from a cosine of the polar angle, Height to tangent-space normal by central differences
